Artificial intelligence is a very hot topic. The reason for it maybe because it sounds cool, or maybe
because most people is using it without knowing it. When most of the people hear the term Artificial
Intelligence, their minds start to automatically reproduce images of robots cleaning the house and acting
as personal butlers. The fact is they might not be so far of what Artificial Intelligence is. However,
Artificial Intelligence may also awake concerns between technology researchers,
and people round the media that know how fast it is advancing, and in those cases:

that says “Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of
intelligent machines that work and react like humans.”

How Am I using Artificial Intelligence? Where is it?
Have you ever used Siri? Alexa? or at least talked to Google in your phone?
If yes, let me inform you that you are using AI. From virtual assistants like Siri to self driving cars,
all those things use Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is a technology that keeps advancing.
Advance that brings both positives and negative sides.

The Positives sides of Artificial Intelligence
There are several positive benefits that artificial intelligence can provide to society in general.
Few examples are: In farming, “The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
estimates that the earth’s population will balloon to 9.7 billion people on by 2050” (Richardson,2016)
This wide increase of population will require that farms grow at least 50% more crops of what they are
currently producing. For this matter, Artificial Intelligence(AI) can help produce more crops in less
time and without spending too much money facilitating the production of enough food to the society
and at the same time saving money. In Medicine, the field of medicine is huge; for this topic we
concentrate in cancer. According to Richardson,”Cancer is a frightening diagnosis, impacting 1.65
million people in the U.S. in 2015. Waiting for biopsy results can be [very] stressful…” (2016).
A solution to that, AI might be able to help to produce faster diagnosis and treatment process. In fact,
by 2020 Intel along with the healthcare industry plans to create “one day precision medicine to cancer
Patients” (Richardson,2016). This means that thanks to AI a patient suffering cancer might go to the
doctor, get a diagnosis and receive a personalized treatment, all in one day. Interesting enough this
project is created in part by a prostate cancer survivor and Intel Marketing Director Bryce Olson.
Another example, of AI in medicine is the VR technology. Some of its benefits are: planning for
complex operations, VR for pain and anxiety, and VR for rehab. One study of stroke patients showed
that “VR rehab led to more improvements in arm and hand movement compared to conventional rehab after four weeks of therapy”(Digiulio,2017).

The Negative sides of Artificial Intelligence
Indeed, Artificial Intelligence has a lot of benefits as it also has a lot of risks. Artificial Intelligence
itself is a risk for some aspect of the society of this time of the century. For example, the machines
programmed with AI may replace humans and cause unemployment for people who lack of a
technological degree. This statement is supported by Oak, M. (2016, September 02) in his article
Weighing the Pros and Cons of Artificial intelligence where it says “If robots begin to replace humans
in every field, it will eventually lead to unemployment. People will be left with nothing to do.
So much empty time may result in its destructive use. Thinking machines will govern all the fields and
populate the positions that humans occupy, leaving thousands of people jobless.”

Not to mention that the lack of employment would lead to a social crisis where the mental
development of the human being would result to be deteriorated due to the lack of use,

But also Artificial intelligence may become in a potential danger if it is misused. Robot do not
have feelings, there are no machines able to emule emotions as hate or love. Therefore, there are
no machines able to differentiate between good and evil. Machines do what they are programmed
for, indiscriminately. However this may become a problem if the machine itself is a weapon that was
hacked and reprogrammed to kill. This may sound a little paranoid but according to the information

devastating: Autonomous weapons are artificial intelligence systems that are programmed to kill.
In the hands of the wrong person, these weapons could easily cause mass casualties.” As a matter of
fact, a system by itself is incorruptible, however in the hands of the wrong person who designs it
conform to their costumes or beliefs, can be devastating.

Conclusion
With all these points, should we believe in the AI as a risk more than an advance? Well, all the
technologies have their risk. Artificial Intelligence has so much contributions to the modern world
as it has risks for the next generations.Therefore, the best solution to be at the level of those risks is to
prepare ourselves and our next generations for when is their turn they may have space in the complicated
agenda of jobs of that time. Artificial Intelligence is not something that can be stopped that is why
it is necessary to have the correct mindset to receive the advances. This is imminent, not so imminent
as this generation expect but a reality of the next generation.
